Illegal sand mining under the bridge on D4399 road in Bushbuckridge puts lives at risk

The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport warned against the illegal sand mining activities currently taking place beneath the bridge on the D4399 that connects Thulamahashe and Edinburgh in Bushbuckridge.

Bongani Dhlamini, spokesperson for the department, says illegal sandmining poses a significant threat not only to the integrity of the bridge, but also to the safety of the communities that rely on this vital infrastructure.

“The Department has received reports indicating that illegal sand miners are extracting sand beneath the bridge, compromising its structural stability. It is extremely dangerous and can lead to the collapse of the bridge, which would have severe consequences, including loss of life, disruption of transport, and substantial financial costs for repairs,” he says.

The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works warned against the illegal sand mining activities currently taking place beneath the bridge on the D4399 in Bushbuckridge.

He called upon all individuals involved in these illegal activities to cease immediately, adding that the department is monitoring the situation and is prepared to act against offenders.

The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, also called upon local authorities, community leaders, and other relevant structures in the area to implement measures to halt illegal sand mining before irreversible damage occurs.

“Once the bridge is compromised or collapses, the cost of repairs will be substantial, and safety risks to our communities will be unavoidable. We appeal to all stakeholders to prioritise safety and to act responsibly to protect our residents and our infrastructure. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of our roads and bridges and will continue to work with all relevant authorities to address this issue promptly,” Dhlamini says.
