Weekend police operation leads to 787 arrests in Mpumalanga

A total of 787 people were arrested in Mpumalanga over the weekend as part of Operation Shanela 2.

Fifty-eight of these are illegal immigrants who were charged with contravening the Immigration Act.

Police also arrested 50 people for possession of drugs and 50 for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Forty suspects wanted for serious and violent crimes were traced and arrested while hundreds of litres of alcohol were confiscated and several liquor outlets were closed down due to illegal trading.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, a number of suspects were also arrested for crimes that include murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of explosives.

The arrested suspects will appear at various magistrate’s courts within the province in due course.
