Councillor Robert Dlamini, caucus leader of the DA in the Mbombela Council, describes Basil’s passing as a huge loss to the community.
“I had the privilege to work with Basil from 2019 when I joined the DA,” Dlamini says. “It was interesting working with him. He was a very humble, yet very experienced councillor. He was fully committed to the community – as well as the party. Basil was a source of wisdom for the caucus because he had been there for such a long time. We learnt a lot from Basil. His death is a huge loss to the community, the DA and the Council.”
As community activist, Basil was also involved in security matters and played an important role in the Nelspruit Community Policing Forum.
“A great one has fallen,” says John Meintjes, CPF chairperson. “This is an incredible loss to the community, especially the community of Nelsville. He was an absolute champion of the community and a pillar of the CPF. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
Gregory Basil Anthony is survived by his wife Ellen, and sons Leavel and his wife Shona, Marvin and Keeno, and grandchildren Leshawn, Kyle and Caleb.
