According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, police received a call from a local hospital at approximately 03:50. When police arrived at the hospital, a medical practitioner pointed out a deceased man and three other victims who had sustained gunshot wounds.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the four victims had been shot while they were on their way from a tavern in Emjindini. The motive for the shooting is yet to be determined.
