Casterbridge Cake Picnic White River offers a delicious day of cakes, local gifts, good food, live music, and community spirit. Tea, coffee, and picnic spots will be available for those keen to enjoy a Lowveld summers day outside.
What to expect at the Casterbridge Cake Picnic White River
Organiser Angela Kent, who is also the founder of the well-known White River Dancing Queens, had a long-time dream of a long table filled with beautiful cakes, inspired by the community bake sales she grew up with.
That dream is now reality with 50 entries across three categories.

Casterbridge Cake Picnic White River competition categories:
- Junior Bakers: For talented young Lowveld bakers
- Amateur Bakers: For passionate home bakers from all over the Lowveld
- Professional Bakers: For experienced baking superstars
Prize sponsor Bakers Bin Nelspruit has donated prizes for the winners.
“Bakers Bin doesn’t just sell products, we sell possibilities! It may seem like just flour and sprinkles but in actual fact it is just a blank canvas and the baker is the artist. We absolutely love seeing what these basic products become in the right hands. Therefore, we love supporting events that celebrate local talent! We have some of the most creative bakers in our community,” says Michelle Venter, owner of the family business Bakers Bin.
“Every slice (or two!) of cake you buy will help turn the bakers’ hard work into a meaningful contribution. Bring your picnic blanket, bring your sweet tooth, and come help make a difference!” says Angela.
After judging, all cakes will be sold, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to Huis Bethlehem*.

Why your support matters: The story of Huis Bethlehem
Huis Betlehem (House of Bread) has been a safe haven in the Lowveld since 1999, when Marlene and André van der Merwe opened their home to children from difficult circumstances, despite having four young sons, only a motorcycle, and no income.
Today, the organisation is still going strong. The children at Huis Bethlehem are statutorily removed from their parents or primary caregivers for their own protection and placed in the house for safety and care.
Mariaan Lourens, executive officer of Huis Bethlehem, says they currently care for 15 children, including two babies needing formula and nappies.
“With rising fuel and living costs we all feel the pinch. We are very thankful to Angela and her team for hosting the Casterbridge Cake Picnic White River and choosing Huis Bethlehem as their beneficiary.
“The communities of White River and Nelspruit have been supporting us for the past 27 years, and for this we are very grateful. Regular donors’ support is testimony of our credibility.”
For more information on Huis Betlehem, visit its website, or send an email to Mariaan Lourens.
