In the past month, the average price of a barrel of crude oil decreased from $69,36 to $69,06 per barrel, mainly due to OPEC’s decision to increase production, and due to the uncertainty caused by the US’s looming trade tariffs, which could affect global economic growth and therefore demand for crude oil.
The price of the average international petroleum product prices of petrol followed the lower oil price, while the prices of diesel and paraffin increased due to low stock levels in the US, unplanned refinery shutdowns and the closure of refineries in Europe. This led to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol by 23,49 cents per litre, and higher contributions of diesel by 69,94 cents per litre, and illuminating paraffin by 35,57 cents per litre. The prices of propane and butane decreased during the period under review.
The Rand appreciated on average against the US Dollar – from R17,84 to R17,76 per USD – during the period under review. This led to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of all products of between 4c and 5c per litre.
The cumulative slate amounted to a positive balance of R3,707 billion for petrol and diesel as at the end of June 2025. Therefore, the slate levy of zero cents per litre remains in the price structures of petrol and diesel with effect from 6 August 2025.
The fuel prices will be adjusted as follows from 6 August 2025:
- Petrol 93 ULP & LRP: Decrease of 28c/l
- 95 ULP & LRP: Decrease of 28c/l
- Diesel 500ppm: Increase of 65c/l
- Diesel 50ppm: Increase of 63c/l
- Illuminating paraffin: Increase of 32c/l on the wholesale price
- Illuminating paraffin: Increase of 43c/l on the suggested retail price
- LPGas: Decrease of 69c/kg on the maximum retail price (except for the Western Cape where it will decrease by 78c/kg.
This adjustment would mean a decrease of about R15 for a tank of petrol and an increase of between R34 and R36 on a 55-litre tank of diesel.
