Hundreds arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol over the weekend

About two hundred and twenty motorists were arrested in Mpumalanga for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs this past weekend.

The police operation – Operation Paseka – was conducted across the province from Friday to Sunday.

As the Easter weekend is approaching, police in Mpumalanga are intensifying law-enforcement action and the community should expect high-visibility roadblocks and intensified police patrols at shopping malls, transportation hubs and other areas of interest across the province.

The acting provincial police commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, warned motorists who continue to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and those who transport illegal goods.

“We continue to exercise a zero-tolerance approach towards drunk driving. Anyone caught behind the wheel after drinking will be dealt with decisively,” he said.
