The motion was tabled in the Legislature by the Democratic Alliance (DA).
The motion called for urgent intervention by the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport to install traffic lights at both the intersections of the Msholozi settlement and the University of Mpumalanga. These intersections are between White River and Riverside Mall in Mbombela.
Trudie Grovè-Morgan, a member of the legislature for the DA, said these intersections have become a nightmare to use during peak hours and expose motorists and students who cross them daily to potential accidents.

The DA also called on members of the legislature to do an oversight or to drive through the mentioned intersections during peak hours to see for themselves the nightmare motorists and students go through on a daily basis.
“The installation of traffic lights in those mentioned intersections is a critical step in reducing the risks of accidents to students, and everyone using the R40,” Grovè-Morgan said.

“We are also aware that Public Works might not have a budget to immediately install traffic lights in those intersections. But the DA asked them to deploy provincial traffic officers in the meantime to assist in directing traffic, helping students cross safely, and ensuring drivers adhere to traffic rules.”
The DA will also write to both the Departments of Public Works asking them to consider building an overhead bridge between the University of Mpumalanga and Riverside Mall.
