Mr and Miss Bergvlam crowned with a celebration of colour, energy and talent

A celebration of colour, energy and talent – this is how one could best describe last week’s crowning of Mr and Miss Bergvlam.

Yet, beyond the glitz and the glamour, this competition represented something much more meaningful: a connection to the community, the upliftment of others, and the instilment of Bergvlam values in the hearts of the finalists.

This is also why 50% of each finalist’s overall score was based on the community work they had completed in the weeks leading up to the event – both within the school and across the Lowveld community.

This year’s finalists went into the community to hand out compliment stickers to strangers, treated the school’s teachers and general workers and also gave the school’s bins a fresh coat of paint.

With the support of sponsors and the rest of the school, the finalists also collected thousands of rands’ worth of sanitary products for people in need. Some of these donations were handed over to GRIP, an NPO supporting survivors of gender violence, while others will be used to support and empower girls and women within the school.

While working within the school and the community, the finalists were also practising for the gala evening.

Each finalist competed in three categories: casual wear, formal wear, and a creative dance performance that brought plenty of energy and excitement to the stage.

The evening took inspiration from vibrant celebrations such as the Mardi Gras and the Rio Carnival, and the finalists fully embraced the colourful theme.

At the end of the evening, Marizaan Serfontein and Rizwaan Guman were crowned Mr and Miss Bergvlam.
