In the past month, the average price of a barrel of crude oil increased from $64,08 to $69,08 per barrel, mainly due to higher shipping rates as well as the geopolitical uncertainty between the US and Iran, as well as the disruption of crude oil supply in the Strait of Hormuz.
The average international product prices followed the increasing crude oil prices. This led to higher contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices (BFP) of petrol by 37,53 cents per litre and of diesel by 81,36 cents per litre of diesel, and 63,81 cents per litre of illuminating paraffin. The prices of propane and butane increased in this period due to the cold weather in the Northern Hemisphere and tighter global supply.

The Rand appreciated slightly on average against the US Dollar – from R16,31 to R16,00 per USD – during the period under review. This led to higher contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol by 16,96c per litre, 19,20c per litre for diesel, and 19,21c per litre for illuminating paraffin.
The cumulative slate amounted to a positive balance of R5,9 billion for petrol and diesel as at the end of September 2025. Therefore, the slate levy of zero cents per litre remains in the price structures of petrol and diesel with effect from 4 March 2026.
The Maximum Refinery Gate Price (MRGP) and the Maximum Retail Price (MRP)of LPGas that is imported through the Port of Saldanha Bay will be R13 076,49 per metric tonne and R 33,84 per kilogram, respectively, effective from 4 March 2026.

The fuel prices will be adjusted as follows from 4 March 2026:
- Petrol 93 ULP & LRP: Increase of 20c/l
- 95 ULP & LRP: Increase of 20c/l
- Diesel 500ppm: Increase of 62c/l
- Diesel 50ppm: Increase of 65c/l
- Illuminating paraffin: Increase of 44c/l on the wholesale price
- Illuminating paraffin: Increase of 58c/l on the suggested retail price
- LP Gas: Increase of 23c/kg on the maximum retail price (except for the Western Cape where it will increase by 26c/kg.)
This adjustment would mean an increase of about R11 for a tank of petrol and about R34,10 on a 55-litre tank of diesel.
