The five were allowed to apply as a result of special medical and other circumstances. Two government officials and one service provider were granted R50 000 bail. One accused who is breastfeeding was also considered for R50 000 bail. One wheelchair-bound woman was granted R5 000 bail.

A total of 33 accused appeared before Nelspruit magistrate’s court yesterday after the Hawks in Mpumalanga executed a coordinated takedown across the province on Sunday.

The operation targeted dozens of suspects, among them senior government officials and business people, on suspicion of fraud, corruption, and money-laundering in 2019 and 2020 involving more than R113 million from the Mpumalanga Department of Education.
All the accused who were granted bail must appear in court again on 26 March 2026. They had to hand their travel documents to the investigating officer and would have to obtain permission from the court if they want to leave the country.

The bail applications of the rest of the accused are currently being heard.
Three more suspects who were arrested yesterday are also appearing today.
