Two arrested in Schoemansdal during operation targeting illegal mining

Two suspects aged 29 and 36 were arrested during an Operation Vala Umgodi operation in Schoemanskloof outside Nelspruit on Friday.

The two were nabbed for mining-related offences and are charged with contravening the National Environmental Management Act.

Operation Vala Umgodi is a multidisciplinary team comprising different police units deployed to act against illegal miners.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the two men were arrested after police received a tip-off about illegal mining activities in the area.

During the operation, several items were seized, including 20 generators, five drill machines, a motor, a shovel and other items believed to be used for illegal mining activities. A silver-grey Ford Ranger bakkie has also been confiscated.

The suspects were expected to appear in the Nelspruit magistrate’s court earlier today.
