Renault launches Kiger compact SUV

Renault has just released the new Kiger, a compact SUV that Renault says will change the face of the local SUV market.

The Renault Kiger’s design was inspired by the Kiger show-car, which was unveiled at the end of 2020. According to Renault, the all-new Kiger is “a real SUV with sporty and muscular SUV styling”. They say with its distinct athletic design the Kiger combines urban modernity with agility, whichever road it takes.

“The spoilers boost the design with their pronounced shoulder lines, while the back sills and wheel arches provide further protection,” the release reads.

The Kiger has 205mm of ground clearance, which is not to be sneezed at. The functional roof bars heighten the vehicle’s shape and contributes to the bold SUV look.

The higher trim levels have 16-inch black diamond cut alloys that enhance the sporty look. Bold black wheel arches enhance the sturdy look of the body. The 2 500mm-long wheelbase offers increased stability and optimises the space inside the car.

The Kiger has what Renault calls its signature LED daytime running lights. The lower part has what they call tri-octa LED PURE VISION headlamps, which contribute to the modern look of the new car. The taillights have glossy black inserts outline the Kiger’s rear double C-shaped lighting signature, with LED taillights.

The top-of-the-range Intens derivative has a two-tone body colour. The Kiger is available in six body colours: Cool White, Planet Grey, Moonlight Grey, Mahogany Brown, Caspian Blue, and Radiant Red.

Although the Kiger is a compact SUV – shorter than 4m – it is quite spacious. According to Renault, thanks to the CMFA+ platform DNA, it offers segment leading roominess, cabin storage and boot space. The interior has been designed to combine the sturdiness of an SUV with sophistication and technological prowess.

The Kiger offers segment-leading space – 710mm between seats. At the rear it provides second-row legroom of 222mm and elbow room of 1413mm. The height of the driver’s seat offers a commanding driving position.

The Kiger also has the best boot space in the segment – 405 litres that can be extended to 879 litres with the second row of seats folded down 60/40.

The higher centre console features an 8-inch floating touchscreen with wireless smartphone replication for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This allows passengers to connect their smartphones seamlessly and to access the special driving and multimedia apps. Passengers can select five permanent shortcuts for faster access to apps and features. The system not only offers voice recognition through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but also Bluetooth connectivity that can pair up to five devices, a USB socket for faster charging and a built-in MP4 video player.

According to Renault, the Kiger’s interior has been specifically designed for ultimate convenience. “The chiselled curves create the impression of a floating cockpit, accentuated by piano-style control dials and suspended aircon controls.

“The seven-inch multi-skin reconfigurable TFT cluster further enhances the modernity of the cabin space.

“The higher spec models offer a multi-sense driving experience as well as ambient lighting. The multi-sense feature enables the selection of different driving modes for a completely different driving experience – i.e., Normal, Eco or Sport mode.

“Normal mode offers an optimum driving experience for city driving conditions. It also provides useful information such as real-time and average fuel consumption – all in a blue colour look.

“ECO mode provides a drive inclined towards economic driving practices, changing the overall appearance of the TFT to green.

“SPORT mode provides a drive experience full of fun and sportiness, with crisper engine response and faster shifting. The overall TFT screen turns to red with quick information of acceleration gauge, torque, power ratios, etc.”

The sound system is also brand new. The “auditorium 3D sound system” by Arkamys has eight speakers – f our 6,5-inch speakers and four tweeters. The system automatically adjusts sound volume according to the speed of the vehicle.

A handsfree smart-access card allows for everyday convenience, enabling doors to be opened and closed automatically, and the engine to be started without a key.

The higher-specification Kiger also offers a reverse camera with guiding lines for greater visibility and precision when reversing or manoeuvring into a parking bay. The Kiger has a turning radius of five metres thanks to its 2 500mm wheelbase.

Motion is provided by a normally aspirated one-litre engine that delivers 52kW and 96Nm. The other engine choice is a three-cylinder turbocharged one-litre that kicks out 74kW and 160Nm of torque with a manual gearbox. Renault claims a combined-cycle fuel consumption of 5l/100km.

The naturally aspirated engine is either paired with a five-speed manual gearbox or the EASY-R five-speed AMT gearbox, which provides the comfort of clutch less driving at affordable pricing.

It features a manual mode that allows the driver to drive either in fully automatic or sequential mode. It ensures efficient engine starting, safe car-overtaking manoeuvres and the best possible driving pleasure.

Renault says the turbo-charged engine delivers an outstanding power-to-weight ratio and the best torque-to-weight ratio in the compact SUV segment. The engine is either mated to a five-speed manual gearbox or an X-Tronic CVT gearbox that provides smooth and responsive gear changes.

The new Renault Kiger is available in three trim levels: Life, Zen and Intens.

Renault says the entry-level Life trim level enables the freedom to be; the freedom to navigate one’s way around life.

“The middle-of-the-range Zen trim level brings added peace of mind thanks to added features to enhance one’s driving experience, while the top-of-the-range Intens trim level allows one to experience life to the full, with advanced equipment levels to pave the way for an exhilarating drive.”

The new Renault Kiger has a five-year/150 000km mechanical warranty and a six-year anti-corrosion warranty, with 15 000 km service intervals.
