Police stop cash-in-transit robbery in its tracks

An attempted cash-in-transit robbery on the Mngwenya Road towards the N4 at Kanyamazane outside Nelspruit was foiled on Friday afternoon when police arrived at the scene.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, a security cash van with security guards was traveling towards the N4 when a dark-brown Mercedes-Benz sedan crashed into it from behind, causing the driver of the cash van to lose control of the vehicle.

The security officers were then held at gunpoint by a group of armed suspects before they placed explosive devices on the security van.

“It seems as if they intended detonating these explosive devices, but abandoned the plan when they realised that the police were on their way,” he says

It is further reported that the Mercedes-Benz used in this incident was torched by the suspects before they fled the scene. They did not take any money and no one was injured.

The police urge anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the suspects to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or to send information via the MySAPS app. All information will be treated as confidential and callers may remain anonymous.
