N4 construction projects progressing well, says TRAC

Trans African Concessions (TRAC) is the concessionaire of the Maputo Corridor and is committed to keeping the entirety of this international route in pristine condition and on par with world standards.

“We continuously implement construction projects along the route,” says Solange Soares, communications manager for TRAC. “These not only allow us to conduct road maintenance and rehabilitation of what already exists, but also provides the opportunity to do major upgrades such as building additional lanes on the road as well as the construction of interchanges and bridges.”

The major construction projects currently underway on the N4 are: 

Bossemanskraal Intersection to the Mpumalanga border (N4-2 km 46 to 55) 

  • Project details: Rehabilitation and new asphalt overlay of Section 2f including the construction of a new eastbound climbing lane.
  • Commenced: April 2023  
  • Expected date of completion: September 2024 
  • Progress: 98%  
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures 
  • Main contractor: ACTOP 

Wonderfontein to Belfast (N4-5 km 10,8 to km) 

  • Project details: Rehabilitation and new asphalt overlay of Section 5a 
  • Commenced: July 2022 
  • Expected date of completion: December 2024 
  • Progress: 72% 
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures 
  • Main contractor: ACTOP 

Alkmaar to Hall’s Gateway (N4-7X km 26,5 to 48,0) 

  • Project details: Rehabilitation and new asphalt overlay of Section 7b 
  • Commenced: January 2024 
  • Expected date of completion: January 2025 
  • Progress: 85%
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures 
  • Main contractor: TauPele 

Mataffin to Crocodile Valley (N4-7X km 46,89 to 58,79) 

  • Project details: Upgrading, rehabilitation and new asphalt overlay of Section 8b which includes the upgrading of Boschrand Interchange and providing additional passing lanes.
  • Commenced: July 2023 
  • Expected date of completion: October 2024 
  • Progress: 92% 
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures, stop & go
  • Main contractor: Roadspan 

Kaalrug Intersection to Kruger gate/TSB Interchange (N4-8X km 15 to km 25,2)

  • Project details: Upgrade of Section 13 which includes the widening of the road to two lanes per direction.
  • Commenced: August 2022 
  • Expected date of completion: October 2024 
  • Progress: 94% 
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures, stop & go
  • Main contractor: Raubex 

Tchumene Interchange to Matola Mall (EN2 km 26,6 to 35,7) 

  • Project details: Widening to two lanes per direction and the construction of service roads on both sides of the EN4 in Section 17.
  • Commenced: August 2022 
  • Expected date of completion: December 2024 
  • Progress: 65% 
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures on service road.
  • Main contractor: Inyatsi 

Tchumene Interchange to Matola Mall (EN2 km 26,6 to 35,7) 

  • Project details: Milling and replacing with new asphalt overlay. 
  • Commenced: April 2024 
  • Expected date of completion: October 2024 
  • Progress: 60% 
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures 
  • Main contractor: TC Projectos LDA

The major construction projects that are about to start on the N4 are:

Schoemanskloof Upgrade (N4-6Y km 2,60 to 61,00) 

  • Project details: Upgrading and rehabilitation, including a new asphalt overlay, of MDC Section 15.
  • Commencement date: October 2024 
  • Expected date of completion: October 2027 
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures. Stop & go
  • Main contractor: TauPele Construction 

Hectorspruit to Lebombo Border Post (N4-8X km 40,00 to 63,00) 

  • Project details: Rehabilitation and new asphalt overlay of MDC Section 15. 
  • Commencement date: January 2025 
  • Expected date of completion: September 2026 
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures, stop & go
  • Main contractor: TBC 

Ressano Garcia Border to Moamba Interchange (EN2 km 1,0 to 40,7) 

  • Project details: Rehabilitation and new asphalt overlay of MDC Section 16. 
  • Commencement date: November 2024 
  • Expected date of completion: June 2027 
  • Traffic accommodation: Single-lane closures, stop & go
  • Main contractor: TBC 

“Although TRAC endeavours to prevent traffic disruptions due to road construction, traffic flow may be affected in certain areas, at specific times, and during peak traffic time.
