Suspect in hospital after mob attempts to set her alight over house robbery and murder in Barberton

A 19-year-old female suspect is currently under police guard in hospital after an attempt to set her alight during another incident of mob justice in Barberton on Monday.

It is alleged that she murdered a mother and her son during a house robbery.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, police received a complaint about a house robbery in which multiple family members had been shot. Three victims had sustained gunshot wounds and a 43-year-old woman and her 24-year-old son succumbed to their injuries shortly after the police arrived. The third victim, the youngest daughter, remains in hospital receiving medical treatment.

“Following the incident, community members reportedly attacked the suspect and attempted to set her alight. Police arrived in time to intervene and rescued the suspect,” Ndubane says. The suspect is currently in hospital under police guard and faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and housebreaking.

No arrests have been made in connection with the mob-justice incident.
