Lowveld bikers making noise to collect toys for children

It is safe to say that everyone knows about the Motorcycle Toy Run, the annual spectacle when the noisiest members of the community do mass rides in 19 regions of the country to donate to the quietest members of the community — vulnerable children.

This year, the Lowveld Toy Run will take place on Saturday, 30 November, and Bernadette Woodford, chairperson of the Lowveld Toy Run, says they are expecting more than 300 motorcycles to join the ride.

The Toy Run route.

“The Toy Run is the motorcycling community’s special day to show how much we care for our community,” says Bernadette. The Motorcycle Toy Run was established in 1982 by the Italian Motorcycle Owners Group (IMOC) in Cape Town and it has only grown since then – also here in the Lowveld.

“Every biker in the area – and from further away – is welcome to join us. Your entry to the Toy Run is a toy as a gift. You deliver the toy when you enter the Toy Run venue. This year we will be celebrating the Toy Run at Bush Baby’s Pub & Grill on the Kaapsehoop Road.

“You are welcome to join us at the Toy Run, even if you don’t ride a motorcycle,” she says. “Just bring a toy as your entry fee.

“We will gather at Valley Hyper in Valencia from 9:30 and after a riders’ briefing will depart at 10:30. The route follows the R104 through the Nelspruit CBD and turns left on the Kaapsehoop Road. The end venue is the well-known Bush Baby Pub & Grill just outside Nelspruit on the Kaapsehoop Road.”

Motorists can expect some disruption in traffic, but it will be quite a spectacle to see so many motorcycles roaring through town.

The Lowveld Motorcycle Safety Initiative (LMSi) and most of the security companies in town will look after the ride’s safety.

There will be a prize for the motorcycle with the most toys as well as other raffle prizes.

“Apart from well-priced drinks, there will be lots to eat and great entertainment. You can still buy a raffle ticket to win a brand-new Suzuki UB125 Burgman scooter worth R29 000. Tickets only cost R20.”

The live entertainment line-up looks like this:

  • 11:00 – 12:30 – Goat n Hare
  • 13:00 – 14:30 – Voodoo Kudu
  • 15:00 – 15:15 – Scooter give-away
  • 15:15 – 16:45 – The Acoustics

All the donated toys, stationery and toiletries will be donated to needy children and the Toy Run committee is awaiting requests from relevant organisations.
