But it would not have happened if it was not for White River’s own two Bingo Queens, Angela Kent and Caroline Harris.
Like with so many other stories of Covid miracles, Angela and Caroline saw restaurants struggling to survive after the pandemic and came up with an idea that could help restaurants — and themselves at the same time — playing bingo.
The idea grew from strength to strength and today they are known far and wide as the Bingo Queens.
The Pub in Nelspruit is packed every Wednesday by people of every age with one thing in common — their love for bingo.
Angela calls the numbers and entertains the crowd with her razor-sharp wit, while Caroline handles the administration of the bingo cards. A progressive jackpot is up for grabs every week, and if no one wins, it is even bigger the next week. The previous jackpot was won when it stood at R12 000.
It was not long before other Lowvelders also joined the new craze.
Bingo is played every last Tuesday of the month at Picasso’s in White River and every first Tuesday at Sam’s Cafe on the Rocks and every time sees a growing number of people attending.
“We are really enjoying our little business,” says Angela. “We are having as much fun as the players and are excited before every bingo night.”
She says they also host a bingo afternoon for the Nelspruit SPCA every few months and during the last event they managed to collect R6 000 for the organisation.
Angela says they are also open to hosting corporate bingo events.
Simply put, bingo is a game of chance. Less simply and more helpfully put, bingo is a game of chance where players are tasked with creating lines in randomly filled cards from numbers that are randomly called by a host. Once a line is successfully created by a player either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, the player calls out “Bingo!”, and wins.
