Man arrested for attempted murder and robbery of Dutch tourists

A 42-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Barberton magistrate’s court on Monday for attempted murder and armed robbery which took place last Tuesday at about 11:40 on the R38 between Barberton and Badplaas.

According to Nelspruit Hawks spokesperson Captain Sekgotodi Dineo, a Dutch couple was driving in a rented Toyota Cross when a dark-coloured VW Polo moved next to their vehicle and fired at the driver, injuring his right hand.

The tourists stopped their vehicle and the three suspects pointed firearms at them and robbed them of their belongings — two cellphones, three bank cards, R5 000 cash, passports as well as an international driver’s licence. They then fled the crime scene towards Barberton.

One of the suspects was arrested yesterday during an intelligence-driven operation led by the Hawks after they had received information regarding his whereabouts. The suspect was found in possession of the stolen items belonging to the victims. He is expected to appear in court on Monday.
