Man arrested after attack on police in Barberton

Police in Barberton arrested a 30-year-old male after an attack on police conducting crime-prevention duties next to Barberton Mediclinic on Sunday at about 01:30.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, police noticed a white Hyundai bakkie without number plates.

They tried to stop the bakkie to conduct routine checks, but the driver did not comply with the police officials’ instructions.

Police then followed the vehicle, which was also carrying passengers. The bakkie finally stopped at Sheba Road in Barberton, and shots were fired from within the bakkie at the police.

Police returned fire and some of the occupants jumped out of the bakkie and fled on foot.

Police then approached the vehicle and a 30-year-old male was arrested.

Police searched the vehicle and found Gauteng number plates, an empty magazine, and one spent cartridge case in the vehicle.

The suspect was taken to the police station for further investigation.
