The long-awaited day when Henrike de Wet, a Grade-10 learner of Nelspruit Hoërskool and Cansa debutante for 2023, and her father Gideon, will start their 2 500km motorcycle trip to raise money for cancer research is finally here.

The trip, known as Route ’74, will start at Hoërskool Nelspruit tomorrow morning. The number 74 is significant, because Henrike’s mother, Hentie, was born in 1974. She lost her battle against cancer in 2021. Henrike also lost a grandmother and an uncle as a result of cancer.

Her target is to raise R74 000 with this trip. So far, she has raised more than R32 000.

Henrike and Gideon – as well as her uncle, Willem Greyvenstein, also on a motorcycle, and her aunt, Edna de Wet, who will be driving the support vehicle – will depart from Duette coffee shop at Hoërskool Nelspruit. The Lowveld Motorcycle Safety Initiative, of which Gideon is a director, always has a Friday breakfast event and this time it will be held at Duette for the special occasion. At exactly 8:00, the police’s motorcycle unit will escort the group out of town as they head for Johannesburg.

The second event of the ride will be on Friday afternoon at RAD KTM in Rivonia, Johannesburg. Gauteng will be the second province of the ride.

On Saturday morning they set off for the third province of the ride, Limpopo. The destination is Polokwane, where the BMW dealership will play host to Route ’74. The local CANSA representative will hold a Shavathon and the BMW dealership’s customers are expected to join the occasion.

While Henrike and the rest of the group head for Polokwane, the well-known Lowveld Auctions WhatsApp group will be hosting an auction in aid of Route ’74. Supporters and donors got together to make the auction something special. You can join the group by following this link.

Sunday will be a day of rest.

On Monday 2 October they set off from Polokwane to Rustenburg in the fourth province of the tour, North West. The BMW dealership will again host them and more or less the same programme will be followed, with a short talk by Henrike and the CANSA representative. There will be an auction at every venue, where items will be auctioned off to raise funds for CANSA.

Tuesday 3 October sees the ride set off to the fifth province of the ride, the Northern Cape. BMW Motorrad Kimberley is the host, and the dealership has arranged for four motorcycles to escort them into town. The dealership has also donated a leather BMW motorcycle jacket – worth R22 000 – for the afternoon’s auction.

Wednesday 4 October has a very short ride to Bloemfontein in the Free State, where the dealership and the local BMW Motorcycle Club will welcome Route ’74 to the sixth province of the trip. Members of the club will be escorting them to the dealership.

Thursday 5 October has the group riding back to Gauteng, where BMW Motorrad Fourways in Johannesburg will host them for the second-last event of the tour. Gideon will know at least one face there, as Sibusiso “Freddie” Ngomane started his career as motorcycle salesperson in Nelspruit.

On Friday 6 October Route ’74 returns home for a welcome-home and final event at BMW Mbombela Motorrad. Apart from the usual auction at the event, there will also be an auction on WhatsApp that will feature very nice luggage sponsored by Motorradical and Turkana Gear. Follow this link to join the group in time. The auction will end on Friday evening.
