Hawks warn against scammers advertising fake police jobs

The Mpumalanga Hawks warned members of the public against advertisements for fake police employment opportunities.

The Mpumalanga head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Nico Gerber, says police have received a number of complaints where community members receive calls from “police personnel” promising them jobs in the South African Police Service.

“Members of the public should bear in mind that no institution will just call you for a job if you have not applied for such a position. It should serve as a red flag when the caller demands money during the conversation.

“Do not provide personal or financial information to any person claiming to be a representative of the South African Police Service. If you receive online communique purporting to be from the SAPS, verify with the official SAPS website to ascertain if there are available posts and application processes pending. Avoid sharing information with strangers,” he says.

Gerber further mentioned that the scammers target applicants who have undergone some selection processes and solicit bribes with false promises.

“At no stage will the SAPS or any government department demand money in exchange for employment. We urge community members to report any such activities or fake job offers to the SAPS,” Gerber concluded.
