Enter now for the 27th Mopani Pharmacy Barberton XCM Mountain Bike Challenge
The Rotary Club of Barberton is proud to announce that the 27th annual Mopani Pharmacy Barberton XCM Mountain Bike Challenge will take place on Saturday 28 January.
The race returns to its original date after it was held in May for the past two years due to Covid-19.
“This well-known race offers cyclists five different distances to choose from,” says Chris Rippon, president of the Barberton Rotary Club. “Riders can test their fitness levels over 110km, 78km, 50km, 30km and 20km.”
The Barberton XCM is known in the cycling community as one of the best organised and toughest one-day mountain bike races in South Africa.
“That is why the race’s slogan is ‘Not as delicate as a daisy’,” says Rippon. “The organisers and main sponsor, Mopani Pharmacy, invites all cyclists, young and old, weekend warriors, and racing snakes, with any type of bicycle (including e-bikes) to join in the fun on 28 January – spectators are welcome too.”
He says the routes will expose riders to various terrain types, from water crossings to single track, from the Greenstone Wildlife Estate to some of the richest gold mines in the world, through Sappi plantations to thousands of Macadamia trees, from rocky ascents to fast descents – there is something for every preference.
If you still have some breath left at the top of the mountain, the incredible scenery will be sure to take the rest of your breath away.
“Cyclists will cycle on routes through a Unesco World Heritage site and the Mountainlands Nature reserve, that are not usually open to the public. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, a challenging, beautiful, and diverse route, then the Barberton XCM is for you.”
The Rotary Club of Barberton uses the funds raised by the event to support locals in need. Initiatives include food and groceries to a local old-age home, meals for school children, and several other initiatives.
“We hereby humbly request your support to enter the race and to share the event as far and wide as possible. The Mountain Bike calendar in South Africa is extremely busy, which cause race dates to clash. That is why, now more than ever, we need every entry we can get. Without support from riders and sponsors, the event cannot be a success – and with this being the 27th race, it really is a milestone for all,” says Rippon.
Pre- and online entries for the race will close on 25 January, whereafter cyclists can enter as follows:
Friday 27 January – Mopani Pharmacy Crossing centre, Nelspruit: 10:00 – 13:00
– Barberton High School: 15:00 – 21:00
Saturday, 28 January – Barberton High School: 05:30 – 21:00
Rippon thanks the cyclists for their continued support over the past 27 years. “We trust that we will see you all in Barberton on Saturday 28 January 2023!”
