In the past month, the average price of a barrel of crude oil decreased from $69,06 to $67,01 per barrel, mainly due to increased production, slower global economic growth outlook as well as uncertainty caused by the US’s trade tariffs.

The price of the average international petroleum product prices of petrol followed the lower oil price, leading to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol by 1,88 cents per litre, of diesel by 54,35 cents per litre of diesel, and illuminating paraffin by 35,54 cents per litre. The prices of propane and butane also decreased during the period under review.

The Rand appreciated slightly on average against the US Dollar – from R17,76 to R17,73 per USD – during the period under review. This led to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of all products of around 4c per litre.

The cumulative slate amounted to a positive balance of R3,26 billion for petrol and diesel as at the end of July 2025. Therefore, the slate levy of zero cents per litre remains in the price structures of petrol and diesel with effect from 3 September 2025.

The Department of Mineral Resourcces and Energy announced that the fuel prices will be adjusted as follows from 3 September 2025:

  • Petrol 93 ULP & LRP: Decrease of 4c/l
  • 95 ULP & LRP: Decrease of 4c/l
  • Diesel 500ppm: Decrease of 56c/l
  • Diesel 50ppm: Decrease of 57c/l
  • Illuminating paraffin: Decrease of 37c/l on the wholesale price
  • Illuminating paraffin: Decrease of 49c/l on the suggested retail price
  • LPGas: Decrease of R1,32/kg on the maximum retail price (except for the Western Cape where it will decrease by R1,51/kg.

This adjustment would mean a decrease of about R2,20 for a tank of petrol and about R31 on a 55-litre tank of diesel.
