Drownings in Mpumalanga increase as rain falls continue

Police in Mpumalanga have issued a strong warning to the public to exercise caution near rivers, streams and dams to prevent drowning incidents as rainfall continues in most parts of the province.

Several drowning incidents have already been reported across the province since the onset of the rainy season.

In the Tonga area, a young lady nearly drowned last week, but was rescued by the police rescue team (including the SAPS diving unit) in collaboration with other stakeholders. Two other people in the same area of Tonga are still missing after reportedly being swept away by a heavy river current.

In KaNyamazane, a man was swept away by floodwaters running through residential areas. At Embalenhle, two people also drowned. In Piet Retief, two more people have also not yet been found after being reportedly swept away by the raging river waters in the past week.

In the Gert Sibande District, a house structure collapsed as a result of the heavy rain and one person died.

As the number keeps rising, the community is urged to refrain from attempting to cross rivers and to report such incidents promptly to emergency services for assistance.

The acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, emphasised the importance of vigilance.

“We understand that due to heat conditions during this season, people often seek relief in rivers, dams, and pools, but it is crucial to remain extremely cautious and to prioritise safety.”
