CARtime means quality time

Three partners who wanted to make difference to service quality to the Lowveld opened CARtime Mbombela, a new vehicle workshop, in May in Riverside Industrial Park.

Elmarie Schmahl has a background in contract management. She moved to Lowveld in 2015 and had been a stay-at-home mom for most of the time.

“We were all frustrated with where we were in life,” says Elmarie. “I was looking for a new challenge and my partners had reached the glass ceiling in their jobs. They were experiencing frustration and were also ready for something new.”

Her brother, Christo Roos, has 22 years’ experience as a master technician with experience in various brands. She says he has the patience of Job, and no technical problem can beat him.

Richard Ward is a Land Rover specialist and received his training on the brand in the UK. He is a master technician and specialises in Land Rover, Jaguar and Volvo. He is also a guru when it comes to remapping car-management systems.

“We realised that we all wanted the same thing: to do what we love and to love what we do. We felt we had the right mix of skills and expertise and on 1 May we opened our doors for business,” Elmarie says.

But not before a lot of hard work had gone into the premises.

“When we moved into the premises, it needed some refurbishing and a lot of cleaning. And we did it all ourselves. And there was a lot to do, because CARtime Mbombela takes up 2 000m2 of floor space!”

At your service: Bongiwe Silubane, Elmarie Schmahl and Richard Ward.

Elmarie says they wanted to do something special by offering quality service to the Lowveld.

“We are very happy with the support we have received from our suppliers, who also believe in what we do. From 1 May, we have worked on vehicles for 350 customers already.

“We have done from minor services to serious problem-solving and investigations into cars that have been giving their owners problems. We believe in investigating a problem thoroughly before we just replace parts because it might solve the problem.

“We take pride in what we do, and we believe it can be seen in the quality of our work. And that is why every single staff member employed here has been hand-picked.”

“Our technician Wrightworth has extensive experience with Chrysler, Jeep, Renault, Citroën and Toyota. That means we can work on basically any brand, but we also have specific experience of Isuzu, Opel, Ford, Hyundai, Haval, GWM and Chevrolet.”

She says they support the Right-To-Repair movement that recently became famous with the new legislation.

“This means we are allowed to service and maintain vehicles that are still under the manufacturer’s warranty– without the owner risking losing the warranty.”

She says they invested extensively in technology, apart from the obvious “ordinary” tools that you need to run a workshop and perform mechanical tasks with.

“We bought the Jaguar / Land Rover SDD and Pathfinder diagnostic machines and equipment; top-of-the-range diagnostic equipment, oscilloscope and timing tools for most other brands; an induction leakage detector; bearing press and more. Even the hand and power tools are high quality, because we do high-quality work.”

To round off the team – and the service offerings at CARtime – Christo’s wife Lizanne runs COFFEEtime, the coffee shop on the upper floor. Fresh ingredients and an attention to detail bring about some lovely eats – apart from the obvious freshly brewed coffee.

“We love what we do – and we do what we love. We have a dream team here at CARtime Mbombela. And our teamwork makes the dream work!”
